Hunland Lamb Rearing Professional Day – October 15, 2024
On October 15th, we held the Lamb Rearing Professional Day at our lamb farm in Kiskunlacháza, where more than 200 professionals – breeders, shepherds, and industry representatives – came together. Our goal was to create a platform where we could share the latest knowledge on lamb breeding, fattening, animal health, and wool utilisation.
Opening
The event was hosted by Erika Mata, Hunland’s commercial director, who officially opened the professional day.
Afterward, Jos Janssen, the owner of the group, introduced the professional section of the program, providing an overview of the current state of the European lamb market. He discussed EU prices, the challenges of export markets, and the current trends in Hunland’s purchase prices.
Lamb fattening technologies
Zoltán Guti, Hunland’s production director, provided insights into fattening technologies. He shared the latest methods used at our sites, from feeding techniques to modern fattening practices.
Animal health challenges
Dr. Bálint Balajthy, Hunland’s veterinarian, addressed the animal health challenges encountered during lamb fattening. He emphasised the importance of disease prevention and the application of effective protocols. He also highlighted the significance of transportation, feed changes, and interaction with new animals.
Innovative uses of wool
Eduard Gubó, our research project manager, presented the innovative uses of wool. He discussed a wide range of applications, from biocomposites to insulation in construction, and even smart textiles! The key takeaway: wool holds enormous potential, and at Hunland, we are ready to make the most of it.
Closing presentation
The presentations were concluded by Tamás Tarpataki, Deputy Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture. His talk focused on the challenges facing the sheep sector and future opportunities in funding schemes. He emphasised the importance of gene conservation programs, animal welfare subsidies, and the effective use of rural development resources.
Farm tour and sharing experiences
Following the presentations, participants had the opportunity to join small group farm tours, where they got a firsthand look at how the lamb farm operates. The day ended with an informal discussion where everyone could exchange ideas and share experiences.
